Nurturing the Entrepreneurial Spirit
More than a job, entrepreneurship is a test of grit, creativity, and the courage to carve your own path. My daughter Madison’s journey with her own brand, ember + ash, has been incredible to watch—she’s bringing her own vision to life, and it’s been inspiring to see it unfold.
She’s grown up immersed in the rhythm of small business—the long hours, the creative process, the constant problem-solving. From the early days of tagging along to the shop to becoming my right-hand in the business, she has seen firsthand what it takes to build and sustain something from nothing. But what makes me most proud isn’t just her willingness to step up; it’s her ability to carve her own path.

With ember + ash, Madison isn’t just following in my footsteps—she’s expanding on what she’s learned and making it her own. Her line of incense and solid perfumes embodies her creativity and attention to detail. She approaches her work with a mix of curiosity and resourcefulness, experimenting with scent combinations, perfecting formulations, and bringing something truly unique to life. She’s got an eye for detail that’s both a blessing and the creative’s curse, forever weighing form against function. I can’t help but smile when I see the gears turning in her head, caught in that familiar battle.

What I love most about this journey is that it isn’t just about business—it’s about legacy. Not in the sense of passing down a company, but in passing down the belief that you can create something of your own.
Seeing Madison take those lessons and apply them to her own brand is a reminder of why I started this path in the first place. It wasn’t just about making soap or candles—it was about independence, creativity, and the satisfaction of knowing that every success is earned. Now, I get to watch her experience that firsthand, and I couldn’t be more proud.

To those raising the next generation of makers, dreamers, and doers: nurture their creativity, show them what’s possible, and let them find their own way. Because sometimes, the best part of building something isn’t what you create—it’s who you inspire along the way.
